Discover more with MALDI-TOF

Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF or MALDI) mass spectrometry represents new technology for microbial identification of over 3,800 species of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria and fungi in less than one minute, resulting in more accurate identification.

The number of species and even sub-species this technology can identify is constantly improving as our database expands due to our global IDEXX network. This technology significantly reduces the time and potential human error involved in traditional methods of microbial identification.

Following species identification, each sample report is then evaluated by our team of experienced Microbiology specialists in the context of patient species, location of sample collection and anamnesis.

Current and clinically relevant antibiotic susceptibility panels

  • Susceptibility testing at IDEXX is based on MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) measurement and in accordance with current international standards.
  • IDEXX uses the VITEK 2 (bioMérieux) automated platform, delivering accurate results hours or days faster than manual methods. An integrated database in these analysers helps detect resistance patterns based on the growth behaviour of the individual pathogen allowing us to transfer MICs into results with practical relevance. Compared to other common methods, resistance patterns are detected more quickly and accurately for a better treatment outcome.

Flexible offerings designed to meet the needs of your patients

  • Agar plates and selective media, as well as enrichment broths are selected based on clinical history and sampling site. The usage of up to 9 media per sample, 5 different temperatures and 3 atmosphere conditions for incubation increases the likelihood that successful growth of pathogenic organisms can be achieved in the laboratory.
  • For several sample types additional testing is included at no extra cost, such as Mycology and Gram staining for ear samples or a bacterial count and inhibition testing for urine samples.
